I WAKE UP DREAMING in Berkeley! To be precise, Landmark’s California Theatre in downtown Berkeley where a five-week festival of film noir — NOIR CLASSICO — commences tonight, Wednesday, September 2. This series will run every Wednesday night through September 30.
This series also represents a major step forward in film noir repertory programming. Traditionally, Landmark Theatres refrain from this sort of programming, opting entirely for new, first run films. This makes for an interesting experiment, one which I hope will meet with great success here in the Bay Area!
The five double features on display this month in Berkeley constitute some of the greatest films of the noir style. Bona fide classics like CRISS CROSS (Sept 2), OUT OF THE PAST (Sept 16), BLACK ANGEL (Sept 23) and THE BIG COMBO (Sept 30) will rub shoulders with some of the more esoteric members of the noir clan: PHANTOM LADY (Sept 2), DETOUR and BLUES IN THE NIGHT (Sept 9), HOLLOW TRIUMPH (Sept 16), RIDE THE PINK HORSE (Sept 23) and THE BURGLAR (Sept 30).
Berkeley (and other East Bay) movie-goers will finally have the opportunity to see classic and obscure noir films ON THE BIG SCREEN with a full audience — exactly the way the people who made these films intended for them to be seen. Don’t miss out!!
